Wood Chips and Frigid Dips
Wood chips spread … check. Clean green gathered … check. Rhubarb cake eaten … check.
Yesterday’s Earth Day work party at the beach was a wheelbarrow of fun. About 80% of the people who showed on Saturday were a different crop of volunteers than those who helped out at our 3/12 Spring Cleanup. Friends of Hidden Beach has a deep bench.
While we spread wood chips a swimmer arrived, took a frigid dip, and once she dried off asked “I was actually wondering if I may be able to help you guys.” This is how we met Megan from Queen Anne, who visited a few of Seattle’s 149 street ends during the pando in search of a swimming hole, settling on Hidden Beach as her preferred entry point. Other volunteers came from Beacon Hill, Capitol Hill, and Eastlake neighborhoods. Hidden Beach has a strong and wide pull.
Once the chips were spread (big thanks to SDOT for dropping them off), we pulled the green trimmings from our last work party to the street. Now that we’ve moved them beyond the fence, SDOT will pick up the greens this week. Multiple missions accomplished.
Libby’s homemade rhubarb coffee cake was a big hit – especially with the crow who managed to snag half a slice when unattended.
